A digital life for the island of Krk’s traditional cookbook

Printing top-quality promotional materials often requires enormous budgets, only for the finished catalogs and books to end up forgotten on the shelves of tourist offices.

While working on the digital cookbook project "50 Delicacies of the Golden Island of Krk" for the Krk Island Tourist Board, the goal was to turn a physical recipe book into a modern, highly visible digital product. Drawing on hands-on experience gained directly within the marketing and web departments of the Croatian National Tourist Board (HTZ), DataLytics successfully delivered this project without spending the budget on expensive software solutions, relying solely on free, publicly available technologies.

In the work of tourist boards, the local gastronomic scene is one of a destination’s strongest assets. Yet that potential too often stays locked away in printed materials or heavy PDF documents that visitors can’t easily browse on their phones, and that search engines can’t see at all.

Giving them a digital footprint doesn’t just preserve traditional recipes from being forgotten — it turns them into an active, modern tool for attracting new guests.

"Digital maturity in tourism promotion doesn’t depend on expensive licenses, but on the ability to turn valuable cultural heritage into an easily searchable, fast, and visually appealing online format."

How do you build a top-tier digital product with zero euros spent on software?

The Krk Island digital cookbook project proves that successful digital transformation doesn’t require a massive budget. By making smart use of publicly available technologies, DataLytics delivered an outstanding result through two key elements:

  • Breaking content into social-media-ready pieces

Instead of one big book or a heavy PDF file, each of the 50 traditional recipes got its own mobile-optimized web page. That gave the Krk Island Tourist Board an endless source of relevant content for its communication channels. Now every individual recipe (like Krk-style "presnac" or "šurlice") can simply be shared as its own link, taking users straight to the destination’s website.

  • The invisible SEO engine: Schema markup

So that Google and other search engines recognize that a page contains a recipe, DataLytics implemented structured data (Recipe schema markup) for every article. This hidden technical layer of code clearly explains the ingredients, prep time, calories, and preparation steps to search engines behind the scenes. The result is turning plain text into a rich, visually highlighted result directly within Google search, dramatically boosting click-through rate (CTR).

Old vs. new way of promoting gastronomy

  • Old way: A beautiful printed cookbook gets handed out at trade fairs or sits in the tourist board’s office. Online, there’s a heavy 50 MB PDF that’s impossible to read on mobile devices and that search engines completely ignore.
  • New way: Every traditional recipe has its own fast, purpose-built web page. Tourists simply cook along on their phones, the content spreads easily on social media, and Google recommends the recipes on its own because it fully understands the page’s structure and content.
Smart solutions bring the greatest value

This project is excellent proof that the success of digital promotion doesn’t depend on the size of the budget, but on the smart use of technology. By combining a rich gastronomic tradition with free, powerful tools, a sustainable, long-term, modern digital product was created that works every day to promote and strengthen the destination’s digital authority.
